Search a song

The hard drive of your computer is so full of music that it seems about to explode with all the Daddy Cools and Shakiras flowing out of its bowels.

The hard drive of your computer is so full of music that it seems about to explode with all the Daddy Cools and Shakiras flowing out of its bowels. Still, every time you want to hear that special number which can add to the pleasure of the rain lashing the windows, you end up playing all the tunes you hate, while the track in question cuddled up in some sub-folder in some long forgotten zip file.
This is where online music comes to the rescue. Time for some fanfare: let’s welcome the music search engine. Well, music sites and online radios are dime a dozen, but this is slightly different.
To put it straight, it’s as simple as Google. Just search for a song, click on the relevant link and play the number. No need for plugins on music players. Simple, isn’t it? There’s no hitch if you are searching for English songs, they are all there. It could be tougher with regional songs, but there are sites that specialise in this segment.
Here are some interesting picks.

Mixturtle.com
The latest entrant is also the simplest. No hassles here. Just click the link you want to hear. Click the plus sign to select a song for the playlist. Though the selection of Indian songs is limited, it’s got most English numbers listed, different versions too. The music quality is good, though some songs are not so smooth on the ear.

Songza.com
Songza has been there for longer and hence has a wider range of songs. The Indian selections are not bad either. The interface, a mixture of red and yellow, doesn’t work all that well. However, the site gives you the option of sharing or blogging the song—you can even link songs to websites. There’s also the option of rating the recordings. Apt considering that quite a few of the songs searched had poor recording quality. The songs take longer to buffer too.

Guruji.com/en/music
This desi search engine takes the cake as far as Indian music, especially Bollywood, is concerned. The top searched songs are listed in the homepage itself. Moreover, every time you search for a song, it gives multiple options based on quality of the link. Be warned, links from some sites play better than others. However, the options are limited if the search is for a song in languages other than Hindi, Kannada, Telugu and Tamil. A search for Carnatic songs also throws up good results. This site also offers playlist options.
