Gibbons Creek Power Plant implodes final structure

CARLOS, Texas (KBTX) - Many across the Brazos Valley heard loud booms Friday morning as the former Gibbons Creek Power Plant imploded its final structure.

Gibbons Creek has been dismantling the former power plant structures since 2021 after the plant was sold to an environmental remediation company, Charah Solutions.

Charah Solutions, through its subsidiary Gibbons Creek Environmental Redevelopment Group, LLC (GCERG), took ownership of the 6,166-acre area which includes the closed power station, the 3,500-acre reservoir, dam and spillway and assumed all environmental responsibilities. GCERG is responsible for the shutdown and decommissioning of the coal power plant as well as performing all environmental remediation work for the site landfills and ash ponds.

In August 2020, community members created a petition against the sale of the Gibbons Creek Coal plant to a different, unnamed buyer, noting their concern about both environmental and health factors. Towards the end of August, the TMPA terminated its interconnection agreement with the unnamed potential buyer because they did not make payments.

The final structure at Gibbons Creek, the concrete lignite silos, went down at 9:04 a.m. Friday.
