ESPN has suspended Jemele Hill, after the SportsCenter anchor used her Twitter account to suggest a boycott of the Dallas Cowboys after owner Jerry Jones threatened to bench any player who did not stand during the national anthem.

This is not the first time that Hill has faced scrutiny for expressing her political views on social media, after previously calling President Donald Trump a "white supremacist."

In a statement announcing the suspension, the network says that it took disciplinary action against Hill because this was her second violation of its social media guidelines.

"Jemele Hill has been suspended for two weeks for a second violation of our social media guidelines. She previously acknowledged letting her colleagues and company down with an impulsive tweet.

"In the aftermath, all employees were reminded of how individual tweets may reflect negatively on ESPN and that such actions would have consequences ...  Hence this decision."

ESPN is a rights-holder and broadcast partner of the NFL.

During her previous suspenion, ESPN reportedly shopped her position to other TV talent, but couldn't convince a candidate to take the job. The network has two weeks to try again.

Players across the NFL have been kneeling, raising fists, or locking arms during "The Star-Spangled Banner" for much of the past two seasons in protest against police brutality against minorities and in search of criminal justice reform.

The protests have taken on a decidedly different tone in recent weeks after Trump accused the players of being anti-American and calling for owners across the league to "fire" any player who protests.

"Wouldn't you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, say, 'Get that son of a bitch off the field right now? Out. He's fired. He's fired!'" Trump said.
