A gunman was found dead after police said he fired a weapon and injured one person on Detroit's west side, then barricaded himself inside a home nearby.

The gunman was found dead inside the home with a gunshot wound, a Detroit police representative said late Tuesday.

“After hours of attempted contact between the Detroit Police Department’s Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT) and the subject inside the home, the Special Response Team made entry into the location, finding a male, unresponsive, with what appears to be a gunshot wound to his body," police said. "A handgun was recovered near the male subject.”

Officers had been called to a home on Carlin Street near Westfield Avenue and Schaefer Highway at about 1:36 p.m. and found a victim who had been shot three times in the legs, said Arnold Williams, deputy police chief, in a video posted to social media.

The person was transported to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

"We're asking at all the neighbors and everyone who's in the area of the 9100 block of Carlin remain inside," said Williams at the time.

When officers arrived at the scene, they learned the suspect had barricaded himself inside the home.

"Officers got to the house, secured the location and, at that point, declared a barricaded gunman," Williams said. "We ask that everybody who's in that area of Schaefer and Westfield just be patient with us."

A special response team and crisis negotiators also were called to the scene, Williams said.

An investigation was ongoing, police said.
